Aloud AAC: common questions
Straight answers about the current app, what it does, and what you need to use it.
What is Aloud AAC?
Aloud AAC is a free augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app for adults on iPhone and iPad. You can tap word tiles, type a message, or use saved phrases to speak out loud. It is developed by Anhad Singh.
Who is Aloud AAC for?
It is designed for adult communication needs associated with speech loss, including aphasia after stroke, ALS or motor neurone disease, Parkinson's, and head or neck surgery. Individual reading, language and motor needs vary. A speech-language professional can help assess the fit.
Is Aloud AAC free?
Yes. The current App Store release is free, with no subscription, in-app purchases, ads or account. Speaking and saved phrases are not metered.
Does Aloud AAC work offline?
Yes. Word tiles, typed speech, saved phrases and built-in sentence templates work without internet. Available on-device Apple Intelligence models can also suggest sentences. Downloading the app, system voices or system models may require internet first.
Which devices can run Aloud AAC?
Aloud AAC requires iOS or iPadOS 26.0 or later on a compatible iPhone or iPad. Apple Intelligence is optional. The App Store checks installation compatibility for your device. There is no Android version.
Do I need Apple Intelligence?
No. The app uses built-in sentence templates when the on-device model is unavailable. You can still speak tapped words, typed text and saved phrases. Model-generated suggestions depend on a compatible device and Apple Intelligence being available.
Does it speak a suggested sentence automatically?
No. You choose a sentence before it is spoken. Say my words speaks the words you tapped without rewriting them, and Stop is available while speech is playing. Read suggestions and choose only a message that expresses what you mean.
Can I use Apple Personal Voice?
Aloud AAC can use a Personal Voice that Apple makes available to the app with your permission. You create and manage that voice in Apple's settings. Availability depends on your device and settings. Aloud AAC does not provide a voice-cloning service.
Which language does Aloud AAC support?
The current communication content is in English. The app offers installed English system voices and available Personal Voices. A Personal Voice does not add translation or another supported content language.
Are my words sent to a server?
The app makes no network requests and has no account or advertising or analytics SDKs. Your saved words and phrases are stored on your device. If you export, back up or share them with Apple's system tools, the destination you choose handles that copy.
Does Aloud AAC provide speech therapy?
No. Aloud AAC supports everyday communication. It does not provide rehabilitation exercises, diagnose a condition or claim to improve recovery. Choosing communication supports with a speech-language professional can help address individual needs.
How is it different from a text-to-speech reader?
Aloud AAC is built for conversations: use word and picture tiles, saved phrases, typed messages and sentence choices. It is not designed to read books, websites or documents aloud.
